Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed investment firm, significantly expanded its Bitcoin holdings, acquiring 1,241 BTC for approximately $126 million. This latest purchase brings their total Bitcoin treasury to 6,796 BTC, valued at over $706 million, surpassing El Salvador’s national Bitcoin reserves. The acquisition, made at an average price of $102,119 per Bitcoin, represents Metaplanet’s most substantial single purchase since initiating its Bitcoin Treasury Operations in April 2024.
This strategic move underscores Metaplanet’s commitment to Bitcoin as a core asset. The firm employs a unique performance indicator, “BTC Yield,” to measure the effectiveness of its Bitcoin accumulation strategy. This metric calculates bitcoin accumulation per outstanding share, showcasing impressive growth: 38% year-to-date for Q2, following a remarkable 95.6% in Q1 2025 and a staggering 309.8% in Q4 2024. Additional metrics, including “BTC Gain” and “BTC Yen Gain,” further assess shareholder value creation through non-dilutive Bitcoin growth.
Metaplanet’s aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy mirrors the high-conviction approach employed by Michael Saylor’s MicroStrategy (MSTR), a well-known Bitcoin adopter. The firm’s ambitious goal is to reach 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025, demonstrating a long-term bullish outlook on the cryptocurrency.
As of Monday, Metaplanet holds the title of the largest publicly traded Bitcoin holder in Asia and ranks 11th globally. This significant position reflects the growing institutional interest in Bitcoin and highlights Metaplanet’s confidence in Bitcoin’s future potential. The company’s transparent reporting and publicly available metrics provide valuable insights into its treasury management and strategic investment decisions, offering a case study for other firms considering similar strategies. The substantial increase in holdings and the ambitious target underscore Metaplanet’s dedication to Bitcoin as a key component of its investment portfolio and its belief in the long-term value proposition of the cryptocurrency.
