Altcoin Season Hope Dim as Traders Unwind Bullish Bets: Crypto Daybook Americas
Bitcoin’s consolidation dampened the altcoin market rally, causing significant declines. XRP dropped double digits, while SOL fell 8%, impacting the CoinDesk 80 index (down 7%) and the CoinDesk 20 index (down 4%). Market analyst Alex Kuptsikevich noted a near 4% market cap loss in the last 24 hours, with 48 of the top 100 altcoins experiencing double-digit losses.
Approximately $2 billion in ether is awaiting unstaking, with over 475 Ethereum validators requesting exit. This surge is attributed to rising ether borrowing rates on platforms like Aave, diminishing the profitability of leveraged staking strategies. These strategies, involving borrowing ETH to boost staking yields, become unsustainable with high borrowing costs, prompting traders to repay loans and reclaim ETH. This unwinding, while initially appearing bearish, isn’t necessarily a negative indicator, with arbitrageurs buying discounted tokens to redeem for ether and strong demand for new staking persisting.
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino announced plans to re-enter the U.S. market with stablecoin offerings. Traditional markets saw mostly flat trading against the dollar, except for AUD/USD, which surpassed resistance at 0.66.

PENGU, a Solana meme token, surged to a record high, driven by South Korean traders and high futures open interest. Derivatives positioning shows declining open interest across major cryptocurrencies, but positive funding rates suggest bullish bets are unwinding rather than a shift to bearish sentiment. CME futures basis indicates bullish sentiment for ETH, while Deribit shows a put bias for BTC and a bullish call bias for ETH. XRP risk reversals remain bullish despite price drops.
