Asia Morning Briefing: MSFT, Meta Soar on Strong AI Earnings, But Crypto AI Tokens Fail to Follow

Asia Morning Briefing: Markets React to Tech Earnings and Fed Uncertainty

Asian markets showed mixed reactions on Thursday, following a day of volatility in global markets driven by recent economic data and Federal Reserve pronouncements. The tech sector, a key driver of recent market trends, saw mixed performance despite strong earnings from Microsoft and Meta.

Microsoft reported a stellar quarter, with cloud revenue surging 27% to $46.7 billion, fueled by strong demand for AI workloads. Azure, Microsoft’s cloud computing platform, crossed $75 billion in annual revenue, demonstrating the significant growth in AI-related services. Meta also exceeded expectations, reporting a 22% year-over-year revenue increase to $47.5 billion, boosted by AI-powered advertising models. Despite these positive results, AI-focused crypto tokens saw a slight dip, falling 1.4% according to CoinGecko’s AI token category index. This muted response contrasts with previous correlations between big tech earnings and AI token performance. The CoinDesk 20, an index tracking major digital assets, remained flat, trading below 4,000.

The subdued reaction in the crypto market is attributed to recent comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell. Powell’s remarks regarding potential tariff-driven inflation introduced uncertainty, dampening risk appetite across various asset classes. Market maker Enflux noted this uncertainty as a key factor contributing to the current holding pattern in markets, anticipating further clarity on inflation and subsequent policy responses.

Nvidia, a key player in the AI hardware space, is expected to report earnings later in August. The outcome of this report could significantly impact the AI token market, potentially serving as a catalyst for renewed growth. Meanwhile, the broader crypto market experienced volatility following Powell’s comments, resulting in over $200 million in liquidations and a brief dip in Bitcoin below $116,000. Ethereum, however, held above $3,800, buoyed by corporate treasury investments. Gold prices fell, reflecting reduced safe-haven demand in light of positive U.S. economic data.

Other notable crypto news includes reports on the potential for U.S. DeFi growth, a Polygon network outage, and reflections on Ethereum’s decade-long evolution. The overall market sentiment reflects a cautious approach, awaiting further economic indicators and central bank policy decisions before making significant moves.
