Bitcoin, XRP, Ether Recoup Overnight Losses as Analysts Point to Growing Threat to Fed Independence
The cryptocurrency market experienced a dramatic reversal following the Federal Reserve’s decision to hold interest rates steady at 4.25%. Initial reactions saw Bitcoin (BTC) plunge to $116,000, with XRP, Ether (ETH), and Solana (SOL) also experiencing significant drops. This downturn stemmed from Chairman Jerome Powell’s emphasis on inflation control over addressing President Trump’s concerns about government borrowing and mortgage costs. However, these losses were quickly recouped. At the time of writing, BTC traded at $118,400, XRP at $0.00314, and ETH at $3,870, according to CoinDesk data. The CoinDesk 80 Index showed a 0.8% increase over 24 hours, nearing 915 points.
This volatility highlights growing concerns regarding the Federal Reserve’s independence. The dissent of two Trump-appointed policymakers, Vice Chair Michelle Bowman and Governor Christopher Waller, who favored a rate cut, fueled these concerns. President Trump’s repeated criticism of Powell’s interest rate policies further intensified this narrative. Analysts, such as Jimmy Yang of Orbit Markets, believe this perceived threat to the Fed’s autonomy strengthens the long-term bullish case for cryptocurrencies. Yang anticipates a period of market indecision until the release of the July CPI data, predicting potential initial sell-offs followed by a possible rebound if inflation fears persist.
Greg Magadini, director of derivatives at Amberdata, echoes these concerns, stating that the Fed’s decision, while expected, did little to alleviate anxieties surrounding its independence. He suggests that a potential dismissal of Powell or premature rate cuts could lead to a significant rally in hard assets, particularly Bitcoin, while simultaneously weakening the value of inflation-sensitive bonds. Magadini highlights the bond market’s continued pricing in of long-term inflation, evidenced by rising long-bond yields since Trump’s election, countering the case for rapid rate cuts to ultra-low levels. The situation underscores the intricate interplay between monetary policy, political influence, and the cryptocurrency market’s response to perceived shifts in economic stability.
