Bitcoin, Ether Tentative, XRP Steady as Trump Announces 30% Tariff on EU and Mexico

President Donald Trump’s announcement of new tariffs on imports from Mexico and the European Union (EU) sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency market, resulting in moderate losses for major cryptocurrencies, with the exception of XRP. The President imposed a 30% levy on both trading partners, effective August 1st, citing insufficient border security measures from Mexico and a lack of reciprocity in the US-EU relationship. These actions follow earlier tariff announcements targeting South Korea, Japan, Canada, Brazil, and a 50% tariff on copper, further destabilizing global markets.

Bitcoin (BTC), the leading cryptocurrency, experienced a decline, trading around $17,400 following the announcement, a 0.6% drop from its European session high of $18,200. Repeated attempts to surpass the $118,000 mark since Friday’s Asian trading hours have been unsuccessful, according to CoinDesk data. Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, also saw a decline, trading 1% lower at $2,930, marked by an indecisive doji candle on Friday. Other prominent cryptocurrencies, Solana’s SOL, Dogecoin (DOGE), and BNB, experienced losses exceeding 0.7%, reflecting the broader market downturn.

In contrast to the overall negative trend, XRP demonstrated resilience, registering a 1.78% gain. This performance stands in stark contrast to the losses seen across other major cryptocurrencies, suggesting potential market-specific factors influencing its price movement. The recent downturn follows a period of intense bullish price action mid-week, where BTC decisively broke through the long-standing resistance level of $110,000, igniting renewed risk-taking across the broader crypto market.

Market analysts remain cautious, anticipating continued price volatility. One prediction from the LondonCryptoClub newsletter suggests a period of consolidation over the weekend, followed by a significant buying surge from Asian markets on Sunday evening, potentially pushing BTC prices beyond $120,000. The impact of Trump’s tariffs on global markets and the subsequent ripple effect within the cryptocurrency ecosystem remains to be seen, highlighting the interconnected nature of global finance and the sensitivity of cryptocurrency markets to geopolitical events.
