Bitcoin Week Ahead: Focus on Powell’s Testimony, U.S. Core PCE as Tariff Deadline Looms

This week’s economic outlook hinges on several key factors impacting both the cryptocurrency and broader financial markets. The recent calm in the oil market following the US airstrike on Iranian nuclear sites has defied predictions of a Bitcoin price drop. However, several upcoming events could significantly influence market trends.

The Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s semi-annual monetary policy testimony to Congress will be a focal point. Powell is likely to face questioning from Republicans regarding the Fed’s interest rate policy, with criticism potentially focusing on perceived economic costs. While he’s expected to reaffirm the Fed’s independence and data-driven approach, his stance on future interest rate adjustments will be closely scrutinized. This is particularly relevant given recent comments by Fed Governor Christopher Waller suggesting a potential rate reduction in July. Market analysts are divided on the likelihood and extent of future rate cuts, with some anticipating two 25 basis-point cuts this year, while others predict only one, possibly a larger 50 basis-point cut depending on weakening job market indicators.

Friday’s release of the core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, is another critical data point. A projected 0.1% month-on-month increase in May could bolster expectations of rate cuts. However, the potential inflationary impact of reinstated tariffs, set to take effect after July 9th following a temporary pause, adds complexity to the prediction. The expiration of this tariff pause adds uncertainty, particularly given ongoing trade negotiations with China and the European Union.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East also remain a significant market factor. While the Strait of Hormuz remains open, Iran’s continued threats to disrupt this vital oil shipping route could elevate maritime insurance costs, indirectly impacting oil prices and potentially influencing broader market sentiment. The cost of insuring vessels traversing the Strait has already increased substantially. This potential for indirect economic disruption highlights the ongoing influence of geopolitical uncertainty on global markets and Bitcoin’s price.
