Chainlink, Mastercard Tie-Up to Let Nearly 3B Cardholders Buy Crypto On-Chain
Mastercard and Chainlink’s collaboration significantly advances cryptocurrency accessibility for over three billion Mastercard users. This partnership integrates several key players to streamline the on-chain cryptocurrency purchasing process. The service flow begins with a Mastercard payment processed by Shift4, a payment processing company. Zerohash, a cryptocurrency custodian, then manages fiat currency and provides the necessary crypto liquidity. Finally, XSwap and Uniswap facilitate the token swap on decentralized exchanges (DEXs).
Chainlink’s crucial role lies in its interoperability protocol. This protocol acts as a bridge, seamlessly transferring transaction data between the Mastercard network and various blockchains. This interconnectivity is vital for enabling direct on-chain cryptocurrency purchases. The partnership aims to bridge the gap between traditional finance and the decentralized world, as stated by Raj Dhamodharan, Mastercard’s blockchain lead. He emphasizes the goal of connecting on-chain commerce with off-chain transactions, thus broadening cryptocurrency adoption.
Chainlink co-founder Sergey Nazarov highlights the deal’s significance in creating a crucial link between traditional payment systems and Mastercard’s massive user base. This development builds upon Mastercard’s increasing engagement with the cryptocurrency sector. Recently, Mastercard partnered with MoonPay, enabling users to spend stablecoins at over 150 million merchants globally. Furthermore, a previous collaboration with Kraken resulted in the launch of cryptocurrency debit cards.
This latest initiative with Chainlink represents a substantial step towards mainstream cryptocurrency adoption. By simplifying the purchasing process and leveraging existing payment infrastructure, Mastercard and Chainlink aim to make cryptocurrencies more accessible to a broader audience. The integration of established payment processors, custodians, and DEXs, coordinated by Chainlink’s interoperability protocol, showcases a practical approach to merging traditional finance with the decentralized cryptocurrency landscape. This streamlined process promises a more user-friendly experience, potentially driving further growth and adoption within the cryptocurrency market.
