Strategy Stock Volatility Sinks to Historic Lows, Possibly Making Shares Less Attractive
MicroStrategy (MSTR), a prominent Bitcoin adopter, is experiencing a significant shift in its market dynamics. Jeff Park of Bitwise Asset Management highlights the company’s lowest 10-day realized volatility since its initial Bitcoin acquisition in 2020. This subdued price movement, coupled with low implied volatility (IV) at 48.33%, contrasts sharply with previous periods of high volatility, such as the November 2024 peak of 225% IV, coinciding with a Bitcoin price surge above $95,000. Currently, MSTR shares trade at $367, holding 592,345 BTC—a significantly smaller weekly increase of only 245 BTC last week, its lowest since March.
This reduced Bitcoin accumulation and compressed volatility suggest a potential saturation point for MSTR’s strategy. Capital flows appear to be shifting from MSTR towards smaller, higher-performing Bitcoin-holding companies, exemplified by LQWD Technologies Corp’s threefold increase in recent days. For four consecutive weeks, MSTR has not utilized its at-the-market (ATM) equity offering program. Consequently, the company’s multiple to its net asset value (mNAV) in Bitcoin terms stands at 1.83x.
MSTR’s previous success was largely attributed to its high-beta, high-volatility nature, making it attractive to options traders and speculators. However, the current compression of volatility may diminish this appeal, potentially leading to capital reallocation towards more volatile Bitcoin-linked assets. In response, MSTR has adopted alternative financing strategies, including at-the-market offerings linked to its perpetual preferred stock (STRK and STRF). The effectiveness of this pivot remains uncertain.
The decrease in MSTR’s volatility, coupled with reduced Bitcoin purchases and the shift in capital flows, raises questions about the long-term sustainability of its current strategy. While MSTR’s substantial Bitcoin holdings remain a significant asset, the changing market dynamics suggest a need for adaptation to maintain its attractiveness to investors and traders. The success of its alternative financing strategies will be crucial in determining its future trajectory.
