Circle Hits New Record With Market Cap Nearing That of Coinbase
Circle (CRCL), a leading stablecoin issuer, experienced a remarkable surge in its stock price, reaching record highs and significantly boosting its market capitalization. Since its initial public offering (IPO) earlier this month, shares have shown explosive growth, appreciating by a staggering 750%. On Monday alone, shares climbed 9%, closing at approximately $263, after reaching an intraday peak just below $299.
This dramatic increase propelled Circle’s market capitalization to roughly $60 billion, a figure closely approaching the $61.3 billion circulating supply of its flagship stablecoin, USDC. This valuation places Circle in the same league as prominent fintech companies like Robinhood and Nubank, and not far behind Coinbase. The surge highlights the burgeoning investor interest in the stablecoin market, a sector with limited publicly traded companies.
USDC, the second-largest dollar-pegged stablecoin, enjoys widespread use across various exchanges, decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms, and increasingly, in payment and cross-border transactions. The recent passage of the GENIUS Act in the U.S. Senate, advancing stablecoin regulation, further fueled the rally. Circle’s CEO, Jeremy Allaire, anticipates trillions of dollars in future growth for the stablecoin market, envisioning its integration into the global financial system.
However, the rapid appreciation of Circle’s stock price has prompted concerns among some analysts who believe the valuation may be exceeding fundamental metrics. Jon Ma, CEO of Artemis, a crypto analytics firm, points to significantly high valuation multiples – 32x revenue, 80x gross profit, 152x EBITDA, and a staggering 285x earnings – suggesting limited upside potential within the current business model. While the current market sentiment is bullish, a more cautious perspective suggests that a thorough evaluation of Circle’s fundamentals is warranted to assess the long-term sustainability of its current valuation. The exceptional growth underscores the significant market potential of stablecoins, yet simultaneously highlights the inherent risks associated with rapidly appreciating assets.
