Circle Valuation Is ‘Outside Our Comfort Zone,’ Initiate at Underweight: JPMorgan

JPMorgan’s initiation of coverage on Circle (CRCL), a stablecoin issuer, has introduced contrasting perspectives on the company’s valuation and future prospects. While JPMorgan assigned an underweight rating with an $80 price target, citing an elevated market capitalization despite acknowledging Circle’s strong position and the USDC stablecoin’s “early-mover advantage,” other analysts hold a more bullish outlook.

JPMorgan’s analysts, led by Kenneth Worthington, expressed confidence in Circle’s management and predicted substantial growth for USDC and the broader stablecoin market. However, their underweight rating reflects their assessment of the current market valuation as overinflated. The stock, initially priced at $31 during its IPO, recently reached a record high of $299, highlighting the significant price appreciation since its market debut.

In contrast, Bernstein initiated coverage with an outperform rating and a $230 price target, characterizing Circle as an “investor must-hold.” Analysts Gautam Chhugani and his team emphasized Circle’s leading position in the digital dollar stablecoin market, highlighting its regulatory advantages, strong liquidity, and key distribution partnerships. Their bullish sentiment extends to the overall stablecoin market, projecting a tenfold increase in market capitalization to $4 trillion within the next decade, from the current $225 billion.

Canaccord Genuity further reinforced the optimistic view, assigning a buy rating and a $247 price target. Their analysts believe Circle possesses the essential qualities for long-term success in the burgeoning digital money market. The diverse opinions from these prominent Wall Street firms underscore the significant uncertainty surrounding Circle’s future performance and valuation, prompting investors to carefully consider the varying perspectives before making investment decisions. The recent surge in interest surrounding Circle, particularly noticeable in South Korea’s retail investor market, further amplifies the complexities and volatility within the stablecoin sector.
