Deutsche Bank’s DWS, Galaxy, Flow Traders Venture to Introduce German-Regulated Stablecoin

Germany is set to launch its first regulated, euro-denominated stablecoin, marking a significant step in Europe’s evolving digital finance landscape. A joint venture between DWS (Deutsche Bank’s asset management arm), Flow Traders, and Galaxy Digital has secured an e-money institution (EMI) license from BaFin (the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority), paving the way for the AllUnity EURAU stablecoin’s release.

Initially announced in December 2023, EURAU is designed to operate within the framework of the EU’s Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation. This ensures compliance with stringent European standards, providing a layer of security and trust for users and investors. A key feature of EURAU is its 100% collateralization, guaranteeing a 1:1 peg to the euro. Furthermore, the stablecoin prioritizes transparency through robust proof-of-reserves mechanisms and detailed regulatory reporting, addressing concerns about the opacity often associated with cryptocurrencies.

The target audience for EURAU extends beyond individual investors. Its design emphasizes seamless integration for institutional clients, including regulated financial institutions, fintech companies, and treasury departments (ERP). The 24/7 availability facilitates instant cross-border settlements, potentially revolutionizing international payments within Europe and globally.

The emergence of EURAU adds to the growing number of euro-pegged stablecoins that have proliferated since MiCA’s implementation. It joins tokens such as Circle’s EURC and Société Générale’s EURCV, highlighting the increasing interest and activity in this sector. The presence of MiCA-compliant dollar stablecoins like SocGen’s USDCV and Robinhood’s USDG further underscores the broader trend of institutional adoption and regulatory oversight within the stablecoin market.

Alexander Höptner, CEO of AllUnity, emphasized the significance of the BaFin EMI license, characterizing it as more than just a regulatory clearance. He views it as a cornerstone for establishing a secure, transparent, and compliant digital payment ecosystem, potentially transforming financial transactions across Europe and beyond. The successful launch of EURAU represents a notable milestone in Germany’s and Europe’s efforts to integrate digital currencies into the mainstream financial system.
