Public Companies Buy More Bitcoin Than ETFs for Third Consecutive Quarter

Publicly traded companies are significantly increasing their Bitcoin (BTC) reserves, surpassing the accumulation rate of U.S. exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for the third consecutive quarter. This trend, reported by CNBC, reveals a robust corporate appetite for Bitcoin despite market fluctuations.

In the three-month period concluding June 30th, corporations added approximately 131,000 BTC to their holdings, representing an 18% increase. This growth outpaces the 8% increase (roughly 111,000 BTC) observed in ETF holdings during the same period, according to data from Bitcoin Treasuries.net.

While ETFs still maintain the largest concentration of Bitcoin among individual entities, holding over 1.4 million BTC—approximately 6.8% of Bitcoin’s capped supply of 21 million—the shift in acquisition rates is noteworthy. This underscores a strategic shift in investment priorities, with corporations actively competing with ETFs in accumulating Bitcoin.

The last time ETFs outpaced public companies in Bitcoin acquisition was in the third quarter of 2024, preceding the reelection of U.S. President Donald Trump. Even amidst the market volatility caused by Trump’s tariff announcements in April 2025, public companies demonstrated a stronger commitment to Bitcoin, expanding their holdings by 4% compared to the 2% growth seen in ETFs.

This sustained corporate interest in Bitcoin, despite market uncertainties, suggests a growing confidence in Bitcoin as a long-term investment asset. The divergence between corporate and ETF buying patterns highlights the evolving dynamics within the Bitcoin market, indicating that institutional adoption extends beyond the traditional ETF investment channels. The consistent increase in corporate Bitcoin reserves reflects a strategic diversification approach, positioning Bitcoin as a significant asset within their overall portfolios. This trend is likely to continue shaping the Bitcoin market landscape in the coming quarters. The sustained acquisition of Bitcoin by public companies represents a compelling narrative of institutional acceptance and a long-term bullish sentiment towards the cryptocurrency.
