Every Fintech Firm Will Run Its Own Blockchain `in Next Five Years:’ Optimism

The cryptocurrency landscape is rapidly evolving, with a significant trend emerging: the proliferation of exchange- and fintech-operated blockchains. This development, predicted by OP Labs, the creators of Optimism, is driven by both economic incentives and technological advancements.

Coinbase’s Base, a layer-2 (L2) network built using Optimism’s OP Stack, serves as a prime example. Base’s remarkable success, evidenced by its substantial user and developer ecosystem and leading position among L2s by metrics like total value locked, showcases the viability of this model. Crucially, Base allows Coinbase to monetize dormant crypto assets held in custody by facilitating lending through its bitcoin-backed loans. This unlocks significant value, addressing the inherent cost of crypto custody, which contrasts with the more established practice of lending out equities.

The core functionality of Base and similar L2s, built on Optimistic rollups, lies in their ability to process transactions off-chain, thereby enhancing Ethereum’s throughput and reducing transaction costs while maintaining security through on-chain result publication. This approach, along with the use of zero-knowledge proofs in other rollups, improves the efficiency and scalability of the Ethereum ecosystem.

The success of Base has spurred imitators, with exchanges like Kraken (Ink), Bybit, Bitget, and OKX, as well as fintech companies such as Robinhood, exploring their own L2 solutions. This trend suggests a broader shift towards a decentralized, yet interconnected, blockchain ecosystem. Optimism envisions an “interoperable Superchain,” mirroring the seamless experience of browsing the web, allowing users to traverse various blockchains effortlessly.

This transition reflects a maturing industry, moving beyond the early days of cumbersome user experiences characterized by slow transaction speeds and high fees. As the technology matures, the demand for more efficient and user-friendly platforms drives the adoption of exchange-operated blockchains, paving the way for greater accessibility and usability within the cryptocurrency space.
