Spain’s BBVA is Advising Clients to Invest Up to 7% of Portfolio in BTC, ETH: Reuters
BBVA, a prominent Spanish financial institution, is actively encouraging its high-net-worth clients to incorporate cryptocurrencies into their investment strategies. This marks a significant shift in the bank’s approach to digital assets and underscores a growing acceptance of cryptocurrencies within the traditional finance sector.
According to Reuters, Philippe Meyer, BBVA’s head of digital and blockchain solutions, revealed at the DigiAssets conference in London that the bank began offering Bitcoin (BTC) investment advice to its wealth management clients in September 2024. This advisory service has now expanded to include Ether (ETH), with plans to incorporate other cryptocurrencies later in the year.
The recommended allocation for cryptocurrencies within client portfolios ranges from 3% to 7%, depending on the individual investor’s risk tolerance. Higher-risk-tolerant clients are advised to allocate up to 7% of their portfolio to crypto assets, reflecting BBVA’s recognition of the potential returns, albeit alongside the inherent volatility.
This proactive approach by BBVA contrasts with the more cautious stance many financial institutions have adopted in the past. While increasing numbers of major financial players are exhibiting a more positive outlook toward cryptocurrencies in 2025, BBVA’s direct recommendation to purchase crypto assets represents a notable step forward. The bank’s decision to actively promote crypto investments highlights its confidence in the long-term potential of the market and its belief that cryptocurrencies deserve a place in diversified investment portfolios.
This development could significantly influence the broader adoption of cryptocurrencies. The endorsement from a major financial institution like BBVA carries significant weight, potentially encouraging other traditional financial players to adopt similar strategies and further legitimizing cryptocurrencies within the mainstream investment landscape. While BBVA did not immediately respond to CoinDesk’s request for comment, the information released at the conference speaks volumes about the evolving relationship between traditional finance and the cryptocurrency market. The move signals a growing acceptance of cryptocurrencies as a viable asset class within sophisticated investment strategies.
