Metaplanet Wants to Use Bitcoin Holdings for Acquisitions: FT

Metaplanet, a Japanese hotel company and significant Bitcoin investor, is executing a two-phase strategy leveraging its substantial Bitcoin holdings. The company recently added 2,205 BTC to its treasury, bringing its total to 15,555 BTC, valued at approximately $1.7 billion. This acquisition positions Metaplanet as possessing the largest corporate Bitcoin stash outside North America.

CEO Simon Gerovich outlined the strategy in an interview with the Financial Times. Phase one involves aggressive Bitcoin accumulation, aiming to reach 210,000 BTC by the end of 2027. Gerovich emphasized the importance of achieving “escape velocity,” a point where the sheer scale of Metaplanet’s holdings makes it extremely difficult for competitors to catch up. He anticipates this phase will last four to six years, after which acquiring Bitcoin will become increasingly challenging due to limited supply.

Phase two represents a significant shift in strategy. Once a critical mass of Bitcoin is accumulated, Metaplanet plans to utilize its holdings as collateral to secure financing from banks. This will enable the company to acquire cash-generating businesses, leveraging the value of its Bitcoin treasury to fuel further growth and diversification.

While cryptocurrency-backed lending is common amongst crypto-native firms, it remains relatively rare in traditional banking. Metaplanet’s strategy, therefore, represents a bold move, anticipating a future where Bitcoin’s acceptance as collateral becomes more widespread. The success of this strategy hinges on the continued growth and acceptance of Bitcoin as a secure and valuable asset, as well as the willingness of traditional financial institutions to embrace cryptocurrency-backed lending.

The announcement saw Metaplanet’s Tokyo-listed shares close 0.84% higher on the day, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s ambitious plan. The company’s aggressive Bitcoin accumulation and innovative financing strategy highlight the evolving role of cryptocurrency in corporate finance and acquisitions. Metaplanet’s actions suggest a growing trend of companies viewing Bitcoin not just as an investment, but as a strategic asset with the potential to unlock significant financial opportunities.
