Strategy Bears Cave In as Anti-MSTR Leveraged ETF Hits Rock Bottom

MicroStrategy (MSTR), a publicly-traded company with substantial Bitcoin holdings, has seen a significant shift in market sentiment. Investors betting against MSTR, primarily through leveraged bearish ETFs, appear to be capitulating.

This shift is evidenced by the dramatic decline of the Defiance Daily Target 2x Short MSTR ETF (SMST). On Monday, SMST plummeted to a record low of $18.17, a 7.58% drop, accompanied by the second-highest trading volume in its history – 2.88 million shares. This high-volume, record low price strongly suggests bear market capitulation; investors abandoning their bearish positions due to sustained losses and diminishing hope of a price reversal. Such events often mark the bottom of a bearish trend.

This bearish capitulation coincides with Bitcoin’s surge above $122,000 during Asian trading hours on Monday, bolstering the crypto market and positively impacting Bitcoin-related investments. MSTR’s stock price mirrored this positive trend, rising over 3% to $456, its highest point since November.

The SMST ETF, designed to deliver daily returns inversely correlated (-200%) to MSTR’s daily price movements, has experienced a significant decline since its August 2022 launch, falling from over $2,000 to its current record low. Despite a net inflow of $8.2 million over six months, the ETF’s performance reflects the overall bearish sentiment towards MSTR that is now reversing.

In contrast, the Defiance Daily Target 2x Long MSTR ETF (MSTX), which aims to deliver double the daily percentage change of MSTR’s share price, reached its highest point since January 24th on Monday, nearing $50. This, however, occurred despite a significant six-month net outflow exceeding $175 million.

MicroStrategy holds approximately 601,550 BTC, making it the world’s largest publicly-listed Bitcoin holder. The recent market activity indicates a potential turning point, with investors shifting from bearish to bullish sentiment on MSTR, largely influenced by Bitcoin’s price movement. The contrasting performance of the short and long MSTR ETFs highlights the dramatic shift in market sentiment.
