Crypto for Advisors: Stablecoins Explained

Consensus Toronto highlights the growing interest in digital asset policy, regulation, and the intersection of AI and blockchain. This year’s event saw significant discussion around stablecoins, their history, and future potential.

Stablecoins, tokenized representations of fiat currencies on a blockchain, have rapidly evolved since Tether’s 2015 launch. Initially used primarily for trading, their utility has expanded significantly. Their transaction volume surpassed $5.5 trillion in 2024, according to Visa, highlighting their crucial role in the digital asset ecosystem. Three primary use cases dominate:

  1. Digital Asset Trading: Stablecoins are fundamental to both centralized and decentralized exchange trading, providing liquidity and facilitating the movement of assets. They underpin trillions of dollars in annual trading volume.

  2. Real-World Assets (RWAs): The tokenization of traditional assets, such as U.S. Treasury bonds, has seen explosive growth, exceeding $6 billion in assets under management. This trend is driven by the ability of stablecoins to provide instant liquidity and seamless integration with DeFi platforms. Major players like BlackRock and Fidelity are actively involved in this space.

  3. Payments: Stablecoins offer a faster, cheaper, and more efficient alternative to traditional cross-border payment systems. Their 24/7 availability and low transaction costs are attracting significant interest from businesses and consumers globally. Companies like Stripe and PayPal are integrating stablecoin payments into their platforms.

The regulatory landscape is also evolving. Europe’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation is attempting to create a structured environment for stablecoins, aiming to enhance stability and protect consumers. While this may reduce market volatility, it could also lead to reduced competition and innovation. The U.S. is also seeing progress, with New Hampshire passing a bill for a strategic Bitcoin reserve and SEC Chair Paul Atkins emphasizing the need for a rational regulatory framework. The ongoing debate regarding regulation and adoption continues to shape the future of stablecoins.
